There are few other more poignant lyricists to be found than the enigmatic Tuggs.t.a.r of spoken word collective Best Kept Secret. Born of Ghanaian descent his uncompromising delivery and sinister conviction produces a powerful concoction with all aspects of the African Diaspora experience.
Early on in his career he gained a distinguished reputation in competitive poetry. In August ’03 he was the only representative in Toronto’s first International Poetry Competition, (where he competed against 37 other poets to reach the finals.) In September ’03 he won the US vs UK grand final of “Lyrical Court” defeating a talented array of U.K and U.S poets.
Tuggs.t.a.r is passionate about telling untold stories and popularising the exciting genre of poetry. He has entered new genre’s pushing boundaries to popularise the written and spoken word. He has self published a poetry book entitled ‘The Way of the Word’. And released his debut CD in 2004 entitled ‘The Africa E.P: From Here to There and Home Again’ which is a creative look into the post colonial African and Caribbean migration to Britain and the struggle thereafter for identity. In 2008 he released the long awaited sophomore CD ‘Season of Lost Love’ another unique collection of creative poetry songs.
As both a poet and journalist, Tuggs.t.a.r prides himself in representing a movement, in February 2005 he became the first national columnist to spoken word, hosting the ground breaking New Word Order in New Nation newspaper. His efforts have earned him international media attention. He has been featured in the BBC 4’s Bespoken Word, TIME OUT magazine, interviewed on Radio One, Choice FM, BEN and OBE as well as GTV in Ghana and numerous other community and internet radio stations.
In late 2004 Tuggstar merged his skills with other ground breaking poets to form the poetical, theatrical group, Best Kept Secret who have toured internationally and performed with the likes of Dead Prez, and The Last Poets.
His diverse experience makes him a sought after workshop exponent. He has been trained by Life Success as a life coach and by New Initiatives as a youth development facilitator. Tuggs.t.a.r is a volunteer for a youth initiative and conducts creative, inspirational and socially conscious workshops. In 2009 he became a poetry coach for the London wide poetry slam competition.
As a solo artist, Tuggs.t.a.r has shared stages with Linton Kwesi Johnson, UK artists Sway, Estelle and was featured on the album of UK Hip Hop legend Blak Twang. He is ever ready to travel where ever to spread the word and has already been blessed to perform in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Norway, Atlanta, Melbourne, Norway and Ghana. In times where words of inspiration and truth are needed, Tuggs.t.a.r should be on the lips of everyone.
